The Bodymind
The Bodymind
Ever since my first year of college in the 80′s I have been acquainted with the concept of the BodyMind as a complete whole. Body, mind, spirit and the frequently ignored; Emotions. I like including emotions even though emotions are energies that are frequently transient or just passing through us. I think to hold them as separate is to cut off our awareness from what could possibly be the part of the picture that requires attention.
The book “The Bodymind” by Ken Dychtwald was required reading in my stage movement class during my freshman year at the University of Nebraska. It describes our bodymind as a unit where body and mind are inextricably intertwined.
It has gotten really trendy now, this idea that was so novel to me in the 80′s that came out of the work of Ida Rolf and Wilhelm Reich and others who pioneered the field of holistic somato-emotional connections long before I was thought of.
I frequently describe to people a common picture of someone in a yoga pose with crossed legs and dots of different colors going from the base of the spine to the top of the head. I share this to explain to them about the chakra system, which is part of the ancient Ayurveda or Eastern Indian system of natural healing. The chakra system by simple definition includes both the energies of the emotions related to each area of the body as well as bathing the organs of that area in nurturing life force needed to perform its vital functions.
I say trendy because this image seems to sell everything from yoga classes to gasoline. Only one of those makes sense on an obvious level. And yet, although I am joking and I have never actually seen a gas station with that image it isn’t too far to stretch to understand that the fuel for OUR Journey is energy of that most primal sort.
The life giving prana that energizes our bodies feeds up into our feet from the earth and down into our bodies through our crown and flows through these swirling energy centers. And we share this energy, heart to heart, mind to mind, body to body as well as chakra to chakra. Or should I say heart chakra to heart chakra etc., etc. I am hearing a song in my head right now, “From thee I receive, to thee I give, together we share and from this we live…” One of these days I will record a little snippet and upload it here. Did I mention that the stage movement class was part of my musical theater program. Sometimes I just think in song…
